Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neural development condition that effects the behavioral and social skills. It consists of a group of three disorders know as Pervasive Developmental Disorders. The three disorders are Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome and Rett Syndrome.

Asperger’s is the most common form of autism spectrum disorder. It is characterized by lack of social skills and repetitive motions. People with asperger’s also have a very distinctive way of speaking. They usually speak in monotone and very formally. They will commonly use figures of speech in a literal sense and have very little facial expressions. People that suffer from asperger’s also live by a routine and dislike change. If the routine is disrupted in any way, it can cause frustration and anger. People with asperger’s are commonly clumsy and lack social interaction skills. Asperger’s is a mild form of autism spectrum disorder, but still has many of the same attributes. Asperger’s differs from other autism spectrum disorders because people with arperger’s have a more cognitive form of thinking. Many that have the disease have fairly high IQ’s and have a great deal of knowledge and logic.

Rett Syndrome is another form of autism spectrum disorder. It is a neural developmental disorder that almost exclusively affects girls. A child that has retts will start off developing at a normal rate, but around the age of six months the development will begin to slow. Decreased hand use and growth of head and brain are the first signs of rett syndrome. A child with the disorder will also have increased hand movement, but the hands will not have any purpose. Also, problems with walking, lack of intellect and in some cases seizures are a sign of this form of autism spectrum disorder.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder is the final type of autism spectrum disorder. This disorder starts with the child developing normal. Then sometime between the age of two and four the symptoms will start to show. These symptoms include lack of social skills, communication problems and decreased motor skills. It is a common form of autism spectrum disorder, but there is no known cause.

Autism spectrum disorder is a very common disease. The cases have increased greatly in the past few years, but there is still no known cause or cure. Many people can live a normal life with autism spectrum disorder and if diagnosed at an early age, the symptoms will be minimal.
