When you are young, hair is black or dark in colour because the hair follicle contains two varieties of the pigment melanin: pheomelanin and eumelanin. When eumelanin is present in greater quantity, the hair tends to be black. Higher amount of pheomelanin makes the hair look brown or blond. Other shades of hair are auburn, chestnut and red. But when the melanin pigment is deficient in the hair, the hair turn grey or white. Grey hair is a natural consequence of the aging process.
Usually, by the time you reach the age of 50 years, hair start to turn white or grey because the cells in the hair follicles stop producing melanin in adequate quantity. However, hair can also become grey prematurely in some people. This can be as a result of illness, such as thyroid hormone deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, malnutrition, and certain autoimmune diseases.
