5 Herbal Treatments For Treating Herpes

Herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus. Though there are several types of herpes, the most common among them is the ones which are caused by type 1 and type 2 of herpes virus.

While the former produces fever blisters and cold sores in the mouth, the latter type causes genital warts. Herpes is unfortunately not a curable condition as the virus is capable of remaining in the nerves for many years and can create an outbreak at any time.

The blisters are very painful and create a lot of embarrassment for the person. However, there are many herbal remedies for treating herpesand preventing further attacks as well. These remedies will also help the person relieve the pain and severity of the cold sores and speed up the healing process.

1. Echinacea

Echinacea helps in boosting the immunity of the person which is in a highly compromised state when you have herpes. Take 1 ml Echinacea tincture and add it to a cup of water. This can be taken thrice a day to boost the immunity of the person. Echinacea is antiviral in nature. The polysaccharides and other chemicals present in Echinacea help in making the white blood cells strong and fight herpes simplex virus with conviction.

2. Lemon Balm

For herpes that affects the mouth, a tea made of lemon balm can be use for rinsing and swishing the mouth. Take a tablespoon of lemon balm that is dried. Add to a cup of water and boil. Allow it to steep for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool the solution and use it for swishing the mouth. Lemon balm contains tannin that fastens the healing process as it is antiviral in nature.  Lemon balm also has great astringent properties that help in keeping the area clean. Lemon balm can be applied in other areas of the skin affected with herpes.

3. Myrrh

Take a cotton ball and soak in a tincture of myrrh. Apply this directly on the sores several times throughout the day and allow it to dry on the skin. The anti inflammatory properties of myrrh help in clearing the cold sores and also help in prompting the immune system response in attacking the herpes simplex virus.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Probably one of the best remedies for herpes is tea tree oil as tea tree oil has anti viral properties that can be used for destroying the action of the virus on the skin and immunity. Take enough tea tree oil and mix the same amount of olive oil along with it. When the blisters of herpes are about to burst, you can apply this mixture on the blister. The antiseptic and antiviral properties of tea tree oil will exert its action on the virus and heal the cold sores faster.

5. St John’s Wort

St John’s Wort is a good remedy for treating herpes as it can reduce the viral action in the body and relives stress as well. Take one teaspoon of a tincture of St John’s Wort and drink it along with a glass of water every day.
