As the name suggests, blackheads are black and ugly bumps on the skin caused as a result of clogging of skin pores. The pores get clogged with dead skin cells, sebum (oil secreted by the skin) and dirt. These impurities become oxidized and turn black in color when they come in contact with the oxygen in the air. This black bump is known as blackhead.
Blackheads are not only ugly to look at but leaving them untreated can lead them to form pus filled acne. And we all know how difficult it is to get rid of acne completely. So, the best thing to do is to prevent blackheads or treat them at the first sign of their appearance.
There are many products, including face washes and facial scrubs, to get rid of blackheads. However, there is nothing better than natural remedies for the treatment of blackheads.
Natural Remedies For Blackheads
Black Pepper For Removing Blackheads
Take five to six black pepper seeds and crush them using a mortar and pestle. Do not use electric mixer for grinding the pepper corns. You need coarsely powdered black pepper. Add a few drops of water to the black pepper powder and make a paste. Apply the paste on the nose, the chin and other areas affected with blackheads. Leave the paste on the skin for 10-25 minutes.
After the paste dries completely wet your hands and gently start scrubbing the areas where you have applied the black pepper paste. Scrubbing the skin with black pepper powder will get rid of the blackheads effectively. Do this treatment thrice a week to prevent formation of blackheads.
If you already have blackheads then use the black pepper powder paste every day for 7-10 days in order to remove the blackheads completely. However, don’t use black pepper powder on the skin if you also suffer from acne or have extremely sensitive skin.
Oatmeal Scrub For Removing Blackheads
Take three to four tablespoons of oatmeal and put it in an electric mixer. Grind the oatmeal to get coarse powder. Add few drops of water and fresh lemon juice in the mixture to make a paste. If you have dry skin then use fresh cream or cold cream instead of water and lemon juice.
Prepare a scrub of pate-like consistency and apply it all over the skin. Leave for 2-3 minutes and then start massaging the skin in circular and anti-circular motions using only the tips of your fingers. Be gentle while massaging; don’t rub too hard or you will damage the skin. Massage the skin for 5-7 minutes and then remove the oatmeal scrub using cold water. Do this treatment twice a week to get rid of the blackheads.
Sugar-Lemon Scrub For Removing Blackheads
Take two teaspoons sugar and add two teaspoons fresh lemon juice to the sugar. Mix the two ingredients well. If you have dry skin then add olive oil or almond oil in the sugar instead of lemon juice. Wash your face and dry it. Take the sugar-lemon/olive oil paste in the palm of your right hand and gently rub both your palms together. Now massage the skin on your face and neck using the scrub.
Don’t forget to scrub areas like nose and chin that are more prone to formation of blackheads. Scrub the skin for 2-3 minutes and not more. You will find the sugar melting away due to the heat produced from scrubbing. Wash your face with cold water after scrubbing. This treatment can be done every day and is good not only for removing blackheads but also for reducing tan.
Baking Soda For Removal Of Blackheads
Make a paste by combining two teaspoons of baking soda and some water. Wet your face and massage the skin on your face with the baking soda paste. Scrub the skin for not more than three minutes as baking soda can cause abrasions on the skin. Scrub the skin gently and don’t be harsh.
Wash away the scrub using cold water. Baking soda paste is excellent for exfoliating skin as baking soda is a natural exfoliator. You can use this treatment every day to keep your skin clear and blemish-free.
Steam For Removal Of Blackheads
Take a small basin and add hot scalding water in the basin. Use a towel to cover your head and place your face a few inches over the steaming basin. With the help of the towel cover your face as well as the basin. Steam your face for a total of 10 minutes but not for more than 2-3 minutes at a go. After 10 minutes get rid of the towel and throw away the water in the basin.
Take a very soft face towel and gently rub the towel on the recently steamed skin. Steaming would have opened the pores of the skin and loosened the blackheads. The blackheads will be easy to remove using a soft towel. Once you have scrubbed your skin with the towel rub ice cubes or splash cold water on the skin to close the opened pores. Rubbing ice on the scrubbed skin will also reduce any redness or inflammation of the skin.
Green Clay For Removal Of Blackheads
Green clay has many minerals which penetrate the pores of the skin and draw out the impurities from them. These impurities include blackheads.
Make a paste by combining one tablespoon green clay and water. Add five to six drops of tea tree essential oil to the green clay paste. Apply the paste on your face in an even layer.
Allow the paste to dry for 15-20 minutes. Remove the paste using cold water. Use the green clay mask for removing blackheads if you have sensitive skin because scrubs can be abrasive over the sensitive skin. Do not use green clay more than twice a week as the minerals in the clay can strip away the layer of natural moisture on the skin.
Always splash your face with cold water or rub ice cube over the skin after removing blackheads. The process of getting rid of blackheads involves opening the pores of the skin for cleansing. These pores can be closed only by using cold water on the skin.
