Intestinal gas is caused due to the inability of the digestive system to break down certain components of foods. The undigested food ferments in the colon and results in intestinal gas.
Intestinal gas is also caused by constipation, lactose intolerance and certain health disorders like irritable bowel syndrome. Since the common cause of intestinal gas is held to be food, it is better to avoid those foods in the diet.

Fiber is considered to be an aid in digestion but people do experience problems in digesting high-fiber foods when they are introduced in the diet for the first time. High-fiber fruits such as raspberries, peaches, raisins, bananas, apples, pears and strawberries can cause intestinal gas to a great deal.
Some of these fruits such as prunes, peaches, pears and apples contain a sugar named as sorbitol that produces gas. In fact, sweet candies that contain sorbitol also tend to cause intestinal gas and should be avoided.
Similar is the case with vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, carrots, turnip greens, potatoes, mushrooms, onions and cauliflower. These vegetables should be avoided as they tend to cause intestinal gas.
These vegetables contain various types of sugar that are difficult to digest and hence cause gas. For example, artichokes contain fructose and asparagus and broccoli contain raffinose that is difficult to digest.
High-fiber legumes such as peas, Brussels sprouts, lentils, etc. also tend to cause intestinal gas. Peas contain soluble fiber that gets digested by large intestine and hence cause intestinal gas.
Beans are notorious for causing intestinal gas due to its high raffinose and soluble fiber content. People should avoid eating beans such as lima beans and black beans.
Starches are rich in carbohydrates that are tough to break down in the digestive tract. Such foods are whole-wheat breads, cereals and whole-wheat pasta. Potatoes and corn also contain starch and cause intestinal gas. One exception in this category is rice which does not cause gas despite containing starch.
Lactose is the primary content of milk and other dairy products. In absence of ample Lactase enzyme, the body cannot break down Lactose properly thereby causing intestinal gas accompanied with stomach pain. People with lactose intolerance must avoid milk, ice cream, cheese, etc.
For most people, oat is the first choice for breakfast because it consists of fiber that reduces cholesterol level. However, oats also contain high-soluble fiber that causes intestinal gas.
Oatmeal, oat bran and oatmeal cookies should be included in the diet gradually if you want to relish its other health benefits. Wheat bran, rich in insoluble fiber, is a good substitute to oat bran as it lets the gas pass through without much trouble.
Carbonated drinks as well as soft drinks or sweetened drinks are just air and hence result in excessive intestinal gas. Sweetened drinks contain fructose that is difficult to digest. Beer is also known to cause intestinal gas.
Fatty foods not only slow the digestion process but also take longer to ferment thereby resulting in intestinal gas. In addition, people should chew food slowly and keep stress at bay to prevent intestinal gas.
