Thyroid is a type of hormonal disorder. When a person is said to have thyroid problem, it simply implies that the person’s thyroid gland, which is situated at the front of the neck, is not working properly. The problem of thyroid occurs when the gland is either overactive or under active.

There are basically two types of thyroid problems

Hyperthyroidism– when the gland produces more than enough hormones.
Hypothyroidism – when the gland secretes fewer hormones

Iodine: Thyroid gland produces iodine, but when it becomes slow, it fails to produce enough iodine for the body. Hence, foods that are rich in iodine must be taken.

Green leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables should be the main component of your diet chart if you are a thyroid patient. These are rich in iron that gives your body enough strength.

Protein: Protein, especially lean protein should be included in your diet chart. So, have protein rich foods like eggs, chicken and lots of fish.

Fiber: Fiber helps in reducing weight hence, try to have more fruits and vegetables that are rich in fiber like beans, wholegrain, seeds etc.

Apart form having these foods there are certain other foods that must be avoided. These are specially the foods that increase the insulin production of the body, like white breads, rice and other foods that are made of flour. A thyroid patient must also avoid taking raw peanuts, as they contain Goitrogen which reduces the thyroid gland’s ability to produce enough hormones.

The patient’s of hypothyroidism must have small meals instead of larger ones. Their foods should have low calories, low fats, less oil and minimum salts.
