Aging and Menopause

October 30, 2008

Menopause is a natural process in which female reproductive system is shut down permanently. Menstrual cycle is the indicator of proper functioning and well condition of female reproductive system. However, after attaining menopause the menstrual cycle gets stopped and reproductive system stops working. Hence, after menopause a woman cannot become pregnant.

The reason for menopause can be different. Most of the woman experience menopause in their middle age or around the age of 45 to 50 years. If uterus of a female is removes due to some reasons, she will not get menstrual cycle and hence, menopause will occur. There are certain complications related to menopause. As a woman attains menopause she can experience the problems like increased weight, irritation, restlessness and a lack of desire for sex.

Generally, menopause is normal and natural aging process. A natural shut down of ovaries is the major reason for menopause. However, during a surgical treatment if the uterus is removed, it automatically results in menopause as without uterus a woman will not get her menstrual cycles. A hormonal disturbance is observed after menopause which may lead to different complications.

There is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to decrease in estrogen level in the body. These health complications vary from woman to woman. Someone experiences almost no problem after menopause and in some woman the problem becomes very difficult. Sometimes a woman may not get menstrual cycles for few months, however this is not definitely due to menopause. If the lining of vagina and that of urethra have become dry and thinner and their elasticity has decreased remarkably, this may be due to menopause.

As menopause occurs, a woman may experience itching and burning in vagina and urethra. The risk of vaginal infection is increased after menopause which may result in urge to urinate more frequently. In some cases the desire for sexual intercourse decline rapidly and the intercourse becomes very painful and uncomfortable. Due to a decline in estrogen level in the body, the blood vessels in our body expand very fast and this causes in increase skin temperature, sweating etc. Wrinkles, acne, thinning hair etc are also the symptoms of menopause.
