Stress, anxiety and an over worked schedule all account for sleepless night. Our lifestyle and poor eating habits lead to lack of sleep, depression and in severe cases even insomnia. The obvious thing you would do would be to consult a doctor and in turn he would recommend sleeping pills to take care of the issue. What happens here is administering these drugs for a few days could lead to dependence. Always keep your doctor informed of any other ailments that you are being treated for like liver or kidney disorders.
Sleeping pills can cause a number of side effects like headaches, dizziness, swelling on the body and allergic reactions. Some cause prolonged periods of drowsiness or difficulty in waking up. An overdose can cause death.
Sleeping pills are not advised for teenagers, adults with heart conditions or history of mental health problems or older people.
If you have an issue sleeping then you could try a few simple remedies before any medication.
-Try taking a brisk walk or jogging for30 minutes before bedtime. Do so outdoors rather than at the gym so that you breathe in fresh air as you exercise. The exercise will help to relieve any stress that you may be experiencing while it also eases your body and prepares it for a long period of rest.
-Draw a warm bath and soak in it for a few minutes .The water will relieve the muscle tension while preparing it for a night rest.
-Drinking a glass or warm milk is known to be effective in inducing sleep.
-Use aromatherapy oils like jasmine or lavender in a diffuser in your room. These help to relax muscle tension and relieve stress. This indirectly helps to induce sleep.
-Read a book or a novel before you go to bed. Avoid murder or suspense novels that may cause nightmares and reduce your sleep or create a panic while you are in sleep
