Aromatherapy: Source of Positive Energy

December 29, 2008

Aromatherapy has become very popular as an alternative medicine in all around the world. It has its traditions rooted in ancient times. People use aromatic odors of essential oils extracted from various herbs. This therapy helps in balancing body, soul and mind. It is one of the quickest remedy for getting relief from stress and depression of daily life. But using it daily and excessively, without having complete knowledge of it, can prove hazardous in most cases.

Taking precautionary measures will help in reaping the best benefits of this wonderful therapy. Always consult doctors or experts of this therapy before beginning treatment of any ailment through it. It is always in best interests, to take proper knowledge of any essential oil before using it. Always select an oil keeping its characteristics and the type of disorders it can cure in due consideration. The modes through which the essential oils are used are also different. So it should also be taken care of.

The main modes of using essential oils are inhalation and external use on skin. People with asthma and skin allergies should take proper care while using this therapy. Some essential oils can make skin more sensitive to allergies and in same way can block the nose. This will create more problems for the patients which should be avoided at all cost. It is always better to use the pure form of essential oils. Adulterated oils should be avoided. Use dilute form of oils instead of their concentrated form to prevent any complications.

Always make sure to avoid the consumption of oils orally as they can be hazardous to the internal body organs. The alcohol which is used as a base of these oils is toxic and not of consumption quality. These oils should be kept in dark to avoid any adverse reaction with the sunlight. They should also be kept away from the children.

Some oils like camphor and bitter almond are dangerous to keep at home. The bitter almond oil contains formaldehyde which is very hazardous for skin and internal organs, if swallowed accidently. Oils like chamomile have been found to induce drowsiness. Some oils like rosemary and sage can be risky for pregnant ladies. A saying is, “precaution is better than cure”. So, take some precautions and enjoy life with aromatherapy.
