Aromatherapy – Treatment Of Migraine

Do you suffer from one-sided headache where the pain is more towards eye region? Do you become sensitive to light and nauseate due to head ache? Do you feel consistent one-sided headache? If answer to any of these is yes, then you are probably suffering from the symptoms of migraine.

Migraine is a neurological disorder with excessive painful headache. It is found to be more common in females than males. Unfortunately, exact cause of migraine is not known. But there can be many causes which lead to migraine attack. The reasons can be genetic factors, allergic reactions, stress, smoking and drinking alcohol, skipping meals, menstrual cycle fluctuations, birth control pills, change in weather or some other diseases.

Migraine is of two types- without aura and with aura. The patients without aura suffer from abrupt change in mood, increased sensitivity to light, fatigue, loss of appetite and muscular pain. These symptoms affect most of the victims. Migraine patients with aura are the most difficult to treat. The aura symptoms affects about one fourth of the migraine patients. In migraine with aura, the patient suffers from neurological symptoms like blurred vision, tingling sensation in arms or face, hallucinations, vertigo and hypersensitivity to touch.

The headache that accompanies migraine is generally one-sided. The headache becomes worse due to daily activities like walking upstairs. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cold feet, cold hand and pallor face are common signs of migraine headache. The pain lasts from 4 to 72 hours. Once the migraine subsides, the patient feels tired and irritable.

Medicinal cures for migraine which can completely cure it are unavailable. So, the best way is to reduce the symptoms of the migraine. If taken with necessary precautions, aromatherapy is a very safe method to get relief from migraine.  Peppermint, sandalwood, lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary are some of the best essential oils, recommended for treatment of migraine. Ginger essential oil is found to be very useful in reducing nausea and migraine attack. If your migraine is related with negative emotions then use 3 drops of roman chamomile and 8 drops of lavender.

If the migraine is due to muscular pain, 4 drops of lavender and 5 drops of peppermint can be massaged on forehead, temples, neck and shoulders. For migraine due to nervous tension, massaging the forehead and temples with 3 drops of roman chamomile, 3 drops of neroli and 5 drops of marjoram can be helpful. Always make sure to use the purer form of essential oil. Keep oils in cool and dark places. In case of pregnant women, children and people on medication, it is always safe to consult a doctor.
