Atherosclerosis Treatment with Proper Diet

Atherosclerosis is considered as one of the foremost risk factor for the strokes, coronary artery disease as well as peripheral vascular disease. The term “Atherosclerosis” has been derived from the Greek words “athero” and “sclerosis”. While athero means paste, sclerosis means hardness.

With the occurrence of the ailment, fatty materials, cellular waste products, cholesterol, calcium etc get deposited in the walls of the arteries. This causes the thickening and the solidifying of the walls of the blood vessels as well as narrowing of the arteries.

Diet plays a vital role in the treating and the curing of the ailment. Emphasis is always laid on the diet plans for the treating of atherosclerosis.

Low fat diet: Low fat diet is extremely vital for the curing of the ailment. Red meat needs to be avoided while fish and broiled chicken without skin should be consumed.

The sufferer should make sure that he is less exposed to free radicals and must include food that has loads of antioxidants and flavonoids in it. Intake of green leafy vegetables like spinach, carrots, collards etc and colorful fruits apples, berries, citrus fruits etc like should be always encouraged.

Alcohol: Individuals suffering from the ailment needs to cut back on the alcohol intake in general and the sweetened liquors in particular. Although red wine is good for heart but consumption of this liquor should be stopped when one is already suffering from atherosclerosis.

Sugar: Sugar in any forms (cakes, pastries, ice-creams, sodas etc) should be strictly eliminated from the diet.
