As per Ayurvedic texts there are twenty different types of diabetes. Among them ten types are due to kapha, six types due to pitta, and four types due to vata.
During ayurvedic treatment to treat diabetes, whole wheat, rice flakes, barley, leafy greens with bitter taste, moringa leaves, snake gourd, bitter gourd, tar vine, garlic, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, green gram, buttermilk, etc. should be included in your diet chart.
Meat, fish, eggs etc. containing high fats, curd, jaggery, sugar, milk, salt etc. should be avoided. Barley and fenugreek seeds can be dry sautéed to prepare various food items as per taste. Boiled barley grains are mixed well with green gram to prepare a soup which is a natural way to control diabetes.
There are so many herbal medicines available to treat diabetes. Ficus glomerata or Cluster Fig Tree, Tinospora cordifolia, Cassia Fistula Lin (Indian Laburnum), Neem tree, Sandal Tree, Red Sandal Tree, Turmeric, etc. are useful in preparing ayurvedic medicines to treat diabetes. Though your ayurvedic physician may prescribe readymade decoctions available in ayurvedic stores, you can also go for simple ayurvedic remedies that can be easily prepared at home.
Following are some simple ayurvedic preparations to treat diabetes. You may take 12 mL juice of fresh turmeric mixed with 12 mL juice of gooseberry (amla or amalaki) in an empty stomach every morning. You may alternatively take 24 mL juice of neem leaves mixed with 5 mL honey.
Triphala [equal quantities of deseeded Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) made to powder] is very useful in treating diabetes. 48 mL of the decoction made by dried turmeric and Triphala is helpful if taken twice a day. Also, barley grains soaked in triphala decoction for one night is dry sautéed, powdered and is taken with honey on an empty stomach.
The root of Salaretin or Salacia reticulata and turmeric made to a fine paste is mixed with buttermilk and is taken along food to treat early diabetes. Equal quantities of curry leaves, fresh turmeric, and garlic grinded to a fine paste can be taken along with buttermilk alternatively. Bitter gourd juice or Tinospora juice, if taken in an empty stomach are beneficial to treat early diabetes.
These medicines should be chosen and taken with your physician’s advice, as per your body type. Though difficult to treat, diabetes can be brought under complete control by ayurvedic medicines.
