Skinned knees are an everyday phenomenon. Why would one focus on such a small issue? Well, because if you do not care for yourself at the beginning stages the minor bruise can lead to a major issue that could hamper the quality of your life. There are several things that you can do to help yourself when you suffer from a skinned knee.

The first thing that you need to do is to wash the wound well. Wash your hands and fingers and then wash your knee with warm water. Use your fingers to clean any dirt that is on the surface of the skin. Then use a mild anti septic soap and wash the wound to get rid of any dirt that is trapped in the wound. Next you need to dry the wound with a clean towel. This will prevent the any puss from forming in the wound. If you notice that the scrape is more than superficial then you need to see a doctor as he will be the best person to analyze if you need stitches. If there is no cut then you can use topical treatments and maintain general hygiene to heal the wound.

If the wound is wet or bleeding after you have washed it then you must dab it with paper towel in order to soak the blood and water that oozes from it. Dab the skin and do not rub; the latter will cause the skin to rupture and cause further damage. Once you have cleaned the wound completely you need to disinfect it. This can be done by dipping a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide or an anti septic liquid. It may cause a stinging sensation for a few minutes but it will fade away. Use a topical ointment on the wound and then bandage it. Closing the wound will prevent any infections. If you notice any foul smell or puss oozing from the wound then it is a sign of an infection. You need to visit the emergency room or your doctor to get the wound checked out.
