Calcium For Healthy Joints
Joints connect the bones of the body and hold them properly. Bones and teeth contain 99% of the calcium. It makes calcium one of the most important mineral of human body. Taking proper calcium intake daily can help in preventing osteoporosis or bone loss. Calcium also helps in numerous body functions and forms part of many enzymes.
Daily calcium intake depends on the age and gender of the person. It’s generally found that women need more calcium than men. Growing children need more calcium in their diet. With advancing age also,daily intake of calcium increases. Pregnant and lactating women need high intake of calcium. Dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt are the major sources of calcium. But some people are not able digest dairy products. Such people should use alternative sources of calcium such as cabbage, broccoli and kale and other green leafy vegetables.
For appropriate benefits of calcium, it is also important that it should be absorbed properly by the body. Cereals, tofu and fruit juices help in calcium absorption by the body. Vitamin D also improves calcium absorption. But some foods like sweet potatoes, spinach, rhubarb, collard greens, and beans can decrease the calcium absorption. Drinking tea and coffee can increase calcium excretion from the body.
Simple tips can be followed to improve the chances of better calcium intake by the body. Include consumption of fat free milk in place of carbonated soft drinks. The salad and soup can be taken with sprinkled cheese over it. Fruits mixed in low fat yogurt can be used as a part of breakfast. Low fat milk can be used in recipes of pancakes and puddings instead of water. Balance your diet with calcium-rich foods like fruit juices and soy drinks.
Bones increases in size and mass, till age of 30. Therefore, it is very important to consume calcium-rich food during childhood and teenage. If a person has good bone mass, his or her bone loss will be less with advancing age. Proper intake of calcium should be teemed up with such exercises which encourage equal distribution of calcium throughout the body. If bones will be strong, the joints will also become strong.
