If aromatherapy can be used for adults and for children then, why not for our pets who are also part of our families? But does it work on animals? You bet it does. Pet lovers all over the world are using the extracts from leaves and flowers to keep their pets healthy and active. Let’s see how.
Lavender acts as an effective germicide for pets and calms down stressed out dogs. Rose, Rosemary, Clary, Sage and Marjoram have been known to be very helpful for dogs. Tea Tree Oil can be used to treat cuts, stings and fungal infections apart from treating skin problems like eczema and insect bites.
Aromatherapy is known to be an effective method to control parasites and fleas, control itching and even reduce carsickness in pets. But how do you use them on your pet? Well, all you got to do is this – let the pet sniff the oil. But, you need to be wary of strong oils and your pet’s reaction to it. If your pet begins sneezing or wheezing when you make him sniff the oil then, do not definitely force him. Do remember though that oils need to be diluted before use. One tip about dilution is to keep olive oil or almond oil as a base for your pet’s skin. Oil can also be diluted in a little brandy and swapped under your pet’s paws or on the tip of his/her ears.
Safety is of prime importance while using aromatic oils for pets. Always consult a veterinarian or an aroma therapist. Animals must never be locked in a room where aromatherapy is done as the heavy scent of oil could prove to be claustrophobic and even fatal.
So, now you know. If you have a pet at home and you have used aromatherapy for yourself you can use it to heal your pet too!
