Carom Seeds In Natural Medicine
Carom seeds or ajwain belongs to Umbeliferae family. Carom seeds are widely used both in ayurvedic and yunani medicines. A member of spices, carom seeds are also valued for its healing properties to cure any disorders related to digestive system.
Carom seeds are traditionally used to treat various digestive problems like diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, acidity, indigestion etc. Water boiled with carom seeds is taken to prevent vomiting and diarrhea. This ajwain water is also effective to get relieved of fatigue due to diarrhea.
Equal quantities of Carom seeds, dried ginger and flowers of Woodfordia Fruticosa or Fire-flame Bush are taken along with buttermilk to treat chronic diarrhea.
Carom seeds are also useful to treat asthma. Dry sautéed and powdered carom seeds is taken in a fine cloth to make a bag and this bag is warmed and applied frequently to the chest area to treat asthma. Equal measures of carom seeds and camphor is powdered and taken along with honey as an effective natural cough suppressant.
The cough due to influenza can be treated if a pinch of carom seeds is chewed with cloves 6 – 8 times a day. Carom seeds are taken along with buttermilk as an effective treatment for bronchitis.
Thymol, the oil extracted from carom seeds, is an excellent remedy for arthritic pain. This oil also known for its antiseptic properties, has to be rubbed on the affected part 2 – 3 times a day. Carom seeds processed in coconut oil is an excellent substitute for thymol in treating arthritic pain.
Carom seeds are also used to prepare a natural tonic which is effective in treating many sexual disorders and also to improve sexual endurance. Equal measures of carom seeds and tamarind seeds are fried in ghee and powdered. One teaspoon of this powder mixed with one tablespoon of honey is taken before bedtime as an excellent sex tonic.
Carom seeds are very helpful to treat gastritis in infants. To cure gastritis completely, one tablespoon of lukewarm ajwain water is given to infants after their food, thrice daily. Ajwain water is also recommended twice a week to ward off digestive disorders. To treat cold in infants, a small ajwain cloth bag is pinned to the dress of the infant, near the lower jaw.
Besides being used both as medicine and spice, carom seeds are also used as natural preservatives. Its flavor and medicinal properties makes it an integral part of Indian cuisine.
