Tonsils are the ball like tissue packs situated at the back side of your throat which helps in prevention of infections. Tonsillitis is the inflammation of tonsils caused due to the bacterial or viral infection. Tonsillitis is not a contagious disease but can create lots of discomfort. A severe soar throat can lead to tonsillitis if not treated from the early stages itself. A chronic constipation can also cause tonsillitis.

Difficulty in swallowing can be noticed in the person suffering from tonsillitis. The person suffering from tonsils infection may have sore throat, fever and headache which are warning signs of tonsillitis. Pain in the ear can be noticed in the person suffering from tonsillitis. The tonsils will swell up and may also turn red in color. Spots of pus may also exude from the swollen tonsils. There can be hoarseness or loss of voice due to the tonsils infection.

Home Remedies For Tonsillitis

Lime is proved to be very effective in the treatment of tonsillitis. In case of an acute tonsillitis, a lime squeezed in a cup of warm water along with 3 to 4 teaspoons of honey and a quarter spoon of common salt can be taken in small amounts. This can very effectively help in curing the tonsillitis completely.

Milk is found to be very valuable in the treatment of tonsillitis. About 200 ml of milk boiled with a little of turmeric powder and pepper powder can be taken before going for bed. This can be continued for three days for better results. This is a very effective home remedy for tonsillitis.


Vegetable juices and fruits juices are beneficial in curing tonsillitis. Vegetable juices like carrot juice, beet root juice, cucumber juice etc. is found to be important in the treatment of tonsillitis. These juices can be taken alone or in combination of two or three of them.


Banafsha or viola odorata flowers are effective in the treatment of tonsillitis. About 15 grams of these flowers can b boiled in about 60 ml of milk for 5 minutes. After filtering this milk can be taken and can be continued for three to four days. Filtered flowers can be fried along with butter and can be worn around your throat which can be helpful in the treatment of tonsillitis.

Fenugreek seeds are effective in the treatment of tonsils infection like tonsillitis. 2 to 3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds powder can be mixed well in about half a litre of water and then can be allowed to cool. This decoction can be used to gargle which can be very effective in the treatment of the tonsils infections.


Mustard, jute seeds, horseradish seeds, flaxseeds, barley and radish seeds can be taken in small amounts and can be grounded to prepare a paste. The paste prepared can be applied over the affected tonsils to get relief and this can help in curing the infections.


Water hyacinth twigs are proved to be good in curing the tonsillitis and reducing inflammation due to it. A few twigs can be burned into ashes and these ashes can be applied over the affected tonsils for the best results of treatments. White pea roots are another important home remedy for tonsillitis. A small amount of white pea roots can be soaked in fresh water and can be then grinded well. This mixture can be taken twice in a day as a part of treatment for tonsillitis.

Another effective way of curing tonsillitis is using the bitter gourd. You can remove the pulp of a bitter gourd and this fruit can be filled with water. The water stored inside it can be drunk after a few hours in small amounts. This is found to be very effective and can be continued for a week.

Fig fruits are valuable in the treatment of tonsils infection. Two to three figs can be boiled in a little of water and can be grinded to make a paste. Applying this paste over the affected tonsils can be very effective in curing the tonsils infection.

Onion juice mixed in warm water can be used to gargle which is a good home remedy for tonsillitis. Mint leaves juice can be also used instead of onion juice for gargling. Gargling warm water mixed with a little of common salt can also give relief from the symptoms of tonsillitis.


Garlic is valuable in the treatment of tonsils infection. 2 to 3 cloves of garlic can be consumed daily which is found to be effective in curing tonsillitis and in reducing the inflammation caused due to the infection.


Diets To Be Followed For Tonsillitis

Patient should intake plenty of water and fruit juices. Juices like orange juice and cucumber juice are found to be beneficial in the treatment for tonsillitis. A well balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, cereals etc. should be given to the person suffering from tonsils infections.

Food items like yogurt, buttermilk and fried oily foods should be strictly avoided from the daily diet of a person suffering from tonsillitis. Spicy food items and junk food items should be avoided in order to make the treatments easier and faster as these food items can worsen the infections.
