Causes and Treatments for Dry Eyes
Dry eyes syndrome is a common phenomenon that is affecting people of all age groups the world over. There are several causes to this syndrome. In this syndrome the liquid that keeps the eyes moist is not secreted and hence the eyes are dry. This happens when the tear glands are affected.
Age is a common factor that causes dry eyes. As we progress in our age our oil glands produce lesser oil and the fluid production gets affected accordingly. This is common to women who have dry skin. Men are less affected.
Some other conditions that can lead to dry eyes are smoking cigarettes, dry climates, hot climates, constant exposure to air conditioning and pollution. Using a computer for long hours without using UV protective glasses are also a cause of dry eyes.
Contact lenses can also make your eyes dry. When you use contact lenses the lenses absorb the moisture in the eyes and make them dry.
Symptoms of dry eyes
Some of the symptoms include redness in the eyes, itching, irritation and tiredness of the eyes.
Helpful remedies to cure dry eyes
You must increase the amount of water you drink. Dehydration can lead to dry eyes syndrome and hence one must make sure that your body is always well hydrated.
Eat a diet rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. In order to fulfill this requirement you must eat plenty of almonds, walnuts, sesame, grape seed and whole grains.
When your eyes begin to hurt or itch due to lack of liquid in them you need to rest your eyes for a while. Sleep or simply lie down and close your eyes in an attempt to restore the liquid. You can also use a washcloth dipped in warm water and place it over your eyes. This helps to increase the liquid quotient in your eyes. The warmth also helps to calm the nerves around your eyes and relieve the itching syndrome.
