Causes, Symptoms and Home Remedies for Chicken Pox
Chicken pox is a viral infection. It causes blister like rashes on your skin. Chicken pox however is not limited to just the skin and you could get them in the inside of your mouth and under your eyelids. In younger children the symptoms are generally milder than adults.
Chicken pox is itchy and causes a lot of uneasiness. Generally chicken pox occurs in childhood however there are times when adults also get infected with it. The treatment for chicken pox is a little more difficult and complicated when it is diagnosed in an adult especially in pregnant women. There are however a few prevention and treatment guidelines which one can follow which will help adults cope with this childhood illness.
Normally once you have the chicken pox immunity you are protected against it for life so get your blood checked to determine if you have the immunity. Chances are that if you have managed to contract the disease then you don’t have the chicken pox immunity. Your doctor would administer the vaccine to help shorten the duration of the outbreak.
The itching sensation can be relieved by having a warm bath with oatmeal. This can be followed with a topical skin cream like Caladryl lotion which can be obtained from any drug store. Sometimes Caladryl lotion does not agree with everyone. If you develop any side effects then you should use Calamine lotion instead.
Another good natural remedy to help relieve itching is to have a bath in warm water and 1/3 cup of baking soda added. This also helps relieve itching and can be done as often as required.
In case you are pregnant and have the pox then consult your doctor immediately as this could affect the fetus and cause cataract, limb defects or other complications.
Trim your finger nails and make sure that they are as short as possible. If the condition is present in an infant make sure that the nails are cut as short as possible. Avoid scratching and put mitt’s on a baby’s hand to avoid them scratching.
