Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Sleep Apnea

What is sleep apnea?

It is a sleep disorder characterized by fatigue and tiredness during the day. Some of the symptoms include loud snoring with periods of choking in between. It can lead to depression, weight loss or gain, high blood pressure, loss of sex drive, irritability and heart burn. It occurs mostly in males that consume alcohol or tobacco.

Is it a serious disorder?

Yes, sleep apnea can be potentially life threatening. It can cause heart attacks, high pressure as well as several other heart disorders. In addition, if an individual suffers from sleep apnea he tends to loose out on relationships due to constant fatigue. This can also affect productivity at work and accidents due to reduced alertness.

If you take more than 30minutes to fall asleep or if you sleep only for a few hours then chances are that you have a sleep disorder. If you feel sleepy and tired during the day no matter how much you’ve slept the previous night or suffer from memory lapses when you wake up then it’s time for you to consult your doctor. Some other symptoms would include waking up from a sound sleep in a sweat or kicking and screaming, waking up every morning with a headache or loud snoring at night. If you witness one or more symptoms for longer periods of time then you need to talk to your doctor immediately.

How can you get rid of it?

Stop all consumption of alcohol and sleeping pills as they relax your body and muscles in the back of your throat making it difficult for you to breathe. Sleep on your side or your hip rather than on your stomach or back. If you are over weight then you must reduce weight. Buy a comfortable pillow; one that supports your head well. You can also try maternity pillows that help you to support the entire torso.
