Cereal and Milk or a Sports Drink After Moderate Exercise?

Most of us have a tendency to think that taking a sports drink helps a person to replenish muscle tissue. But sports drinks are costly and all may not be able to afford it. So a study was carried to study the effect of cereal and low fat in accomplishing the same purpose of replenishment of muscle tissue.

The study was carried on a team of cyclists who cycled for two hours after an initial warm-up session.  After this moderate exercise, when they were reasonably tired they were given cereal and low fat milk on the first day and a sports drink on the next day. They studied the relative effects of glycogen replenishment and muscle protein replenishment in both the cases. It was found that the effects of taking a whole grain cereal with milk gave the same results like a sports drink.

Hence it was found that there was no need to consume an expensive sports drink to replenish muscle tissues when there were far cheaper substitutes. Cereal with low fat milk was also effective in providing easily digestible high quality protein that promotes protein synthesis and helps one to adapt for training sessions. This combination of whole grain cereal with a bit of low fat or skimmed milk was the most ideal way to refuel oneself at home.

So it is argued that people doing moderate exercises and amateur athletes do not need a costly refueling and replenishing method as a sports drink and can easily do with a bowl of multi whole grain cereal with some low fat or skimmed milk. It is a more natural and economic way too.

To conclude those who exercise moderately, amateur athletes as well as all those who exercise daily and need replenishment of muscle tissue do not be carried away by the name that only sports drinks would help because they make tall claims. Just go in for that bowl of whole grain – one grain or multigrain with that splash of low fat or skimmed milk and feel good and energetic again. It is best to add why go in for a costlier substitute when you can save precious money on an equally readily available effective substitute.
