The easiest way to get rid of the cold and mucus from your system is to drink plenty of fluids. Increasing hydration will help to eliminate the toxins from the body and give you relief from the condition within a few hours. Water is the best form of hydration. You can drink warm water and regular intervals. Add a spoon of honey and lime juice in the warm water. The anti bacterial properties of the honey will help to prevent the bacteria from spreading and multiplying. You must drink hot beverages like soups and herbal teas. These will give you relief from the congestion for a few hours.

Rinsing your mouth with warm water and salt will relieve a sore throat.

If the mucus is thick and is causing suffocation and breathlessness then you can use a nasal spray to thin the mucus and eliminate it. You could also try steam inhalation therapy to thin the mucus. Saline sprays are available commercially and you can buy them at the local drug store without a prescription. Steam inhalation can be done in the comfort of your home. You could use a facial steamer if you have one; else you can boil a pot of water. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water and inhale the vapors that emit from the water. You can use these treatments several times a day; it will get rid of the mucus from the chest and prevent shortness of breath.
