Stomach ache accompanied with diarrhea is a common health problem. It happens to everyone once in a while. Almost any food can cause indigestion if not eaten properly.
For example, if you eat too much or too fast or when you are under stress any food can cause indigestion. However, there are some foods which may trigger indigestion and cause severe diarrhea.
Common Foods That Can Cause Diarrhea Or Indigestion
Milk is one of the most common foods that causes diarrhea. Indigestion problems due to consumption of milk are more common in people who are lactose intolerant. It is best if you avoid milk or any other dairy products to avoid having any symptom of indigestion. If you frequently suffer from indigestion then it is advisable to maintain a food diary to see if you are lactose intolerant.
Hot pepper is another common food that causes indigestion. The symptoms of indigestion usually take shape after few hours of eating hot peppers. Hot peppers have a compound known as capsaicin which is the main cause of indigestion and diarrhea in people. Also, some people face difficulty in digesting the seeds and the skin of hot peppers.

Olestra is a commonly known artificial fat which is known to cause diarrhea. This artificial fat substitute causes indigestion as well as anal leakage. Olestra is found in potato wafers, especially the ones which are light or low fat. Olestra passes straight through the body without absorption and triggers diarrhea.
Another common food ingredient which causes diarrhea is sugar substitutes. Sorbitol and mannitol are sugar substitutes which are present in many foods such as candies and yogurt. These artificial sweeteners are not easily absorbed in the intestines and causes flatulence and bloating. The bacteria present in the intestines feed on these artificial sweeteners and cause flatulence.
Caffeine has stimulating effect which triggers contractions and frequent bowel movements causing diarrhea. All the caffeinated drinks are diuretic in nature which causes frequent urination. Frequent urination causes dehydration that worsens diarrhea.
Insoluble fibers from foods are another leading cause of diarrhea. If you are suffering from mild diarrhea then avoid having foods which are rich in insoluble fiber.
Raw vegetables, raw fruits and nuts are foods that are rich in insoluble fiber which stimulates the digestion process and increases diarrhea. Insoluble fiber passes straight into the bowels without being dissolved and increases diarrhea.
Acidic foods such as potatoes, vinegar, cooked tomatoes and citrus fruits cause indigestion. Foods high in acidic value must be eaten with caution as they may increase the chances of getting indigestion. Acidic foods must be eaten with a combination of foods that are rich in soluble fiber, as the soluble fiber can absorb the acids reducing the chances of getting indigestion.
Fructose can increase the risk of severe diarrhea. Fructose is found in honey and fruit juices. Fructose should be eaten with soluble fiber else it may cause bloating and diarrhea.
