A common cold is rightly like the name suggests – common. During the winter months and flu season you will have just about everyone coughing and sneezing and spreading the infection around as if it were something that you need to be proud about. If you are under the impression that you will be able to cure the cold then you are mistaken, there is no way that you will be able to do that. As a matter of fact the only way to get rid of the cold is to let it runs its course. What you can do is try a few remedies to ease the symptoms that are the ones that cause the distress.
Stock up on Vitamin C when you have a cold. This could be in the form of oranges, juices or supplements that are available in the form of chews. A huge dose of Vitamin C can help you to shorten the infection from a week to 2 to 3 days. It also helps to decrease the intensity of the cold during the course.
If you have a sore throat with the cold then you must have a few zinc supplements; these helps to relieve the pain and itchiness. If you are able to get zinc lozenges then you look for ones that are citrus or honey flavored; they are easier to chew on. Be careful not to overdo them though; they are not sweets and you must use them as per the prescription mentioned. Large doses of zinc can be lethal.
Take a hot bath; the steam and vapors from the hot water will helps to ease the decongestion.
Eating chicken soup has been proved as an effective cure against cold. The soup helps to eliminate the germs and bacteria from the system and helps to flush out the mucus. You also need to drink plenty of water in order to replace the fluids that you loose when you flush out the germs and mucus from your body.
If you want to get rid of the cold fast then you must get as much rest as you can. This helps your immune system to relax and rejuvenate. If you take a few days off from work do not start with household chores; that’s not the reason for your absence from work. Take a nap or read a magazine or watch a movie.
