Deal with Depression With the Help of Diet and Exercise

Depression can be devastating and sometimes life threatening. There are many prescription drugs that are available which work but there are also a lot of side effects which are caused by them. Some people are able to cope with the side effects. There are natural alternatives that are available instead of prescription drugs however if you are currently taking prescription drugs then DO NOT stop taking them unless you have fist consulted your doctor about natural alternatives.

The first thing that you can do is a change in your diet. Having a healthy and well balanced diet is important for the body to get all the nutrients it requires. Fish should be a part of your diet and should be had at least three to four times a week. Fish is rich in omega three fatty acids which is utilized by the brain constantly. Apart from omega three fatty acids he brain also requires omega six acids which is found in oils such as corn oil. Studies have shown that when omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are not balanced then this can cause symptoms of depression. Low levels of blood sugar has also been found to increase depression so make sure that you have regular meals which will help maintain the sugar levels in the blood.

Exercising is an important way to help your self maintain a healthy and active mind. Since depression affects the brain it is important to exercise and make sure that you are focused on the task at hand. If you are over weight then this could also lead o symptoms of depression and exercising would be beneficial to your entire well being. Avoid aerated and caffeine based beverages instead drink plenty of water.

St.John’s Wort, SAMe and 5-HTP have been proven to be effective in dealing with depression however before trying any of them you should consult your doctor first. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid are also good alternatives to help deal with depression.

Try and avoid the people or places that are causing the depression if it is related to that. If depression is due to work then it would be advisable to start looking for another place to work in or another career path if your current career has come to a stand still.
