Dos And Don’ts For Acne Prone Skin
Skin conditions are very upsetting particularly the kind that affects your face. After all, you have to look at yourself in the mirror day after day and that is not easy when your face is pockmarked and red all the time.
Acne is a very common skin condition affecting men and women from their teenage years and can continue to affect them even when they are in their 40s. It is caused by the excess oil or sebum that mixes with dirt and clogs the pores, causing them to inflame. The trick with acne is to know what to do and what not to do. So here is my list of dos and don’ts for acne prone skin that can minimize outbreaks.
Dos And Don’ts For Acne Prone Skin
Do Use a Gentle Cleanser
Acne prone skin is generally very oily and is easily clogged with dirt. Regular soaps contain harsh chemicals that can cause your skin to inflame further. Using a gentle cleanser will help reduce the oil present on your skin. Check with your dermatologist before using any cleanser. Skin care experts normally recommend soap free, paraben free and alcohol-free cleansers. You can also use a herbal cleanser, particularly one that contains tea tree oil.
Do Drink Plenty of Water
It’s surprising how many of us forget our 8 glasses of water a day, particularly during these hot days. Keep your body clean inside out, there is only so much you can do on the surface. Drinking water flushes out the toxins from your body and helps regulate body functions.
Do Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables
While teenage acne often leaves scars that fade over time, adult acne is a problem that can dog you even when you’re in your 40s and 50s. Middle-aged women get acne due to hormonal imbalances. A healthy diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to ensure that your body functions properly, without any deficiencies or excesses.
Do Protect Your Face from the Sun
Avoid exposing your face to the sun as it can irritate the skin and cause redness and itching. Normally acne treatments cause the skin to turn sensitive which means the sun rays can be very harsh on it. Wear a sun hat or carry an umbrella. Get your daily dose of vitamin D by exposing your arms, legs and back to the sun but protect your face.
Don’t Rub or Scrub
We all know that one element of a good skin regime is exfoliation. However, there can be nothing worse than rubbing already irritated skin. Using a face scrub or rubbing the skin while washing your face will cause the skin to break into more pimples. While washing your face, gently splash water and then gently dab with a towel to dry your face.
Don’t Touch Your Face
This means kick the reflex that makes you pinch, pick or meddle with your pimples. Avoid touching your face with your fingers. Use a clean tissue paper instead. Our fingers carry plenty of dirt. Transfer that to your face and the bacteria will have a field day on your skin, causing your pores to clog and inflame.
Don’t Use Too Much Make-Up
This is a tried and true step in this list. I use nothing other than eye-liner and lipstick and I can confidently say that it has vastly improved my skin, which was often riddled with pimples. If you must use make-up, use it very sparingly. Consider using mineral makeup and invest in quality products. Avoid using powders or powder based makeup altogether.
