Post Nasal Drip

If you want to clear your throat again and again to get rid of something settled there or something stuck in it or if your throat feels irritated, sore and inflamed, and you have a feeling that something is constantly dripping down it then you can be said to have a postnasal drip.

The glands in the nose, throat, stomach and intestines produce mucous daily to keep these areas moist and to trap any alien particles and impurities. The mucous produced in the nose mixes with the saliva and runs down the throat without even being noticed.

But when excess mucous is produced or if the produced mucous is thicker than usual and if this mucous is not discharged through the nose then it drips through the back of the nose into the throat. This is known as postnasal drip. It is mostly caused by air pollution, sinus infections, nasal or sinus polyps, influenza and certain medicines.
