Effects Of Contraceptives On Women Health

December 1, 2008

Contraceptives have emerged as one of the best methods to get rid of unwanted pregnancy. Undergoing abortion exposes women to various health hazards. Therefore, ending pregnancy before it begins is better than abortion. Using contraceptives is useful for removing unnecessary risks to women body. Contraceptives not only provide protection from unwanted pregnancy, they also prevent women from various diseases.

Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are some of the incurable diseases which can be avoided by using contraceptives. Discussing about the health benefits of contraceptive medicines is a taboo subject in our society. This has given rise to many misunderstandings among women about it. Uneducated women especially think that contraceptives are harmful to their bodies.

Some common misconceptions about contraceptives are: decreased fertility of female reproductive system, irregular menstruation, weakness in body and early menopause. Many types of contraceptives are available for women in market today. Different women use different types of contraception according to their convenience. Hormonal contraception, barrier methods, spermicides, intrauterine devices, sterilization and natural contraception are various types of contraceptives available today.

Use of hormonal contraceptives needs medical prescription. The hormonal contraceptives contain combinations of estrogen and progesterone or progesterone only. They are generally taken in form of oral pills and are the most popular forms of contraception in women. Barrier method physically prevents the sperm from entering female reproductive system. This method includes the use of diaphragm, cervical cap, sponge, male condom and women condom.

Spermicides are the chemical agents found in form of jellies or gel, foams and suppositories. Intrauterine device is a T shaped device which contains progesterone hormone and is placed into the uterus by a healthcare person. Sterilization is a surgical method, where a person becomes unable to reproduce permanently. This method is, therefore, one of the least popular methods. Some women depend on natural methods of contraception which include avoiding unprotected intercourse during their most fertile period of the months.

Although contraceptives are safe they can show some side-effects, especially oral pills. The side effects of oral pills can be headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, stomach upset or nausea. Sometimes these effects become worse to increased blood pressure, yellowing of eyes or skin, cheat pain and shortness of breath. In such cases, consulting a doctor is advisable. With some precautions, contraceptives are one of the best ways to maintain good women health.
