Essential Oils: A Quick Guide

Essential oils of various plants, flowers, seeds, etc. are now used in aromatherapy and in various traditional medicines.  These oils are getting popular day by day as they are providing relief in various ailments without administration of drugs that leave behind dangerous side effects. Here are some common essential oils you will find useful in various conditions.

One property of essential oils that is often the point of discussion is the anti-oxidant property. This property is shown by essential oils of Black Pepper, Nutmeg, Oregano, Pimento, Sage and Vanilla. Most of the essential oils also have anti-depressant, relaxing and sedative properties. The list of such essential oils include Bergamot, Chamomile, Citronella, Clary Sage, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemongrass, Orange, Patchouli, Rose and Ylang Ylang.

Almost all the essential oils have some anti microbial property or the other like being anti fungal, anti bacterial or anti-parasitic. Many essential oils have anti-septic properties. They include Bergamot, Birch, Chamomile, Camphor, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Citronella, Clove, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Nutmeg, Oregano, Parsley, Patchouli, Pine, Rose, Sage, Sandalwood, Spearmint,  Tea tree, Thyme, Wintergreen, Ylang Ylang and the list goes on.

Many of the essential oils like Yarrow, Thyme, Thuja, Sage, Peppermint, Myrtle, Lavandin, Jsmine, Ginger, Fennel, Caraway and Anise have expectorant properties. For treating improper digestion you can use essential oils with digestive properties like Anise, Black Pepper, Chamomile, Cardamom, Coriander, Cumin, Dill, and almost all the names you can find on the spice an herbs shelf of your kitchen. Similarly, the list of essential oils with diuretic properties runs long too and includes Birch, Cardamom, Citronella, Juniper, Lemongrass, Parsley, etc. Many of the essential oils like Nutmeg, Sage, Rose, Parsley, etc have laxative properties.

Essential oils are used for treatment of joint pains and muscular pains also. Such properties are shown by essential oils of Birch, Black Pepper, Thuja and Mustard. Some essential oils like that of basil show ophthalmic properties and good for cutting various eye problems.

Many of these essential properties are used in perfumes for their deodorant properties. They include Cypress, Clary sage, Patchouli, Bergamot, Tarragon, Eucalyptus, Geranium, etc. Many essential oils like that of Vanilla, Orange, Nutmeg, etc are reputed aphrodisiacs.

Some essential oils like Chamomile, Citronella, Peppermint, Sage, Sandalwood, etc. have so many properties that getting a vial of these can prove to be solutions for a number of ailments.
