Foods to Avoid When Suffering From Diarrhea

June 30, 2009

Lack of bowel movements can cause a lot of discomfort and the foods that you eat are the most common cause of the loss of bowel movements. What you eat is just as important as what you don’t eat.

Avoiding fatty foods or foods that are rich in fats is advisable if you are suffering from diarrhea. Foods that are cooked in gravy, fried or greasy and creamy foods are those that are the ones that are the main culprits in the cause of diarrhea. They cause the intestines to get blocked and prevent the passing of excreta in the body.

For those that are lactose intolerant, it is best if you stay away from all foods that are dairy based. This includes milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, buttermilk and yogurt. Though these products are known to be effective agents in the digestive process for a few it causes bloating, acidity and gas and hence avoidance is in their best interest.

There are certain artificial sweeteners that have a laxative effect. These include sugar free candy and gums and diet drinks. They contribute to acidity and gas and hence if you notice the adverse effects these foods have on your system, you must give them up immediately.

Certain foods like broccoli, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, legumes, onions and peas make a person fell uneasy and bring about bouts of acidity. To help to ease this sensation one must eat smaller portions of these foods or avoid them as far as possible.

Caffeine drinks and alcohol generally do not cause diarrhea, however avoiding them for a few days until your stomach has settled down is a good idea. This helps to reduce the possibility of recurrence of the diarrhea.

Whether you suffer from diarrhea or not general hygiene is a must when it comes to food. Always make sure that you wash the foods well before they are processed. This helps to prevent infections and avoid illness. Wash your hands well before you touch the foods, you are about to prepare. Wash all the utensils and surfaces that you will be cooking the food on, in warm water and soap. This helps to eliminate the possibility of bacteria and germs that are harmful to the system. Refrigerate leftovers after consumption. This helps to reduce the bacteria that form in the food. Also freeze foods if you are not going to consume them within 24 hour. It is the best way to preserve them.
