I suffer from PMS and I know how it affects me and my family. I pity those around me. Several symptoms together come and hound me and attack several parts of my body causing aches, pains, irritation and most of all lack of sleep. Fortunately I learnt of ways to play with my diet that helps me to get rid of these pesky problems every month.
The first thing that you must do when you experience signs of PMS is to reduce your intake of sugar. Sugar causes you to get irritated faster and also reduces sleep. At this time your body needs to rest as it is preparing for the next few days where you will be suffering a loss of blood and will be in a lot of pain.
Avoid caffeine at all levels. Sodas normally have caffeine in them and hence must be avoided. Always read the labels of the sodas and fizzy drinks that you drink, most of them are caffeine based. Chocolates again are a big ‘no- no’ as they add to your stress. Even dark chocolate that is normally considered good should be avoided at this time.
Avoid being hungry. Eat several tiny meals in the day. Snack on fruits and salads. Celery sticks, carrot sticks and cucumber should be your snack preference. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables at this time. Simple preparations that avoid the use of oil are good.
Eliminate dairy products from your diet as they cause bloating. Milk, cheese and yogurt that are normally good food choices must be eliminated from your diet before your periods.
Include whole grains, pasta and rice in your diet for these days. The calories that you gain during the week will help to keep your energy levels up during the following days. You must have vitamin supplements to keep up your energy levels.
