Gout, the degenerative bone disease is not uncommon in aged males. This common type of arthritis develops due to elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. This condition is also known as Hyperuricemia, though many people with elevated levels of uric acid in blood may not exhibit symptoms of Gout.

Uric acid is a by product of the Purines, which we take regularly with our food. Abnormal deposition of uric acid or the inability of the body to process the uric acid leads to the deposition of uric acid crystals around the joints. Genetics, obesity, excessive intake of alcohol, hypothyroidism, malfunctioning of the kidneys and certain medications are other causes for the Gout. Uric acid crystals can also be deposited in tiny fluid filled sacs called bursae giving rise to a condition called bursitis.
