Guidelines for a Clear Liquid Diet

A clear liquid diet is recommended to those who are scheduled for surgery or post surgery. You may also have to get onto the diet if you are suffering from diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or severe stomach aches that may be linked to appendicitis. It is also recommended for severe cases of heart burn and acid reflux. When on this diet you need not drink only those liquids that are transparent; those that you can see through.

If your doctor recommends a clear liquid diet then you must also request him to give you a list of the drinks that you may have. If you experience any sort of stomach aches or cramps due to the diet then you must inform him immediately. You must note that this sort of a diet does not give your body the nutrition that it requires so you must avoid it for more than 3 days.

If the reason for you being on this diet is dehydration then you must add some salt to the liquids that you are drinking. The same must be followed if you are on the diet due to nausea and vomiting.

You must not use this diet for weight loss as it will not serve the purpose. You may loose a few pounds while on this diet but you will gain them when you resume to solid foods.

What can you eat when you are on this diet?

Clear liquids do not have to be without color. Fruits juices that do not have pulp classify as clear liquids. Cranberry juice, apple juice, grape juice, filtered lemon juice and punch are the liquids that you can consume when you are on this type of a diet. You can also drink tea and coffee provided you do not add milk into them. You may also have beverages and sports drinks. You cannot have any aerated or fizzy drinks; you must also stay clear of energy drinks. Mineral water is the best to consume during the diet since it is normally processed with minerals. You can also have gelatin, sugar, honey, jelly and hard candies for dessert.
