Health Benefits of Oats

April 24, 2009

I could never eat oats as a child. No matter what my mother tried or how delicious the porridge looked; if I knew that there were oats in it I could not stomach it. Yet, I was made to eat it, whether I liked it or not. And eventually I learned to love it but that was only after I realized the health benefits of oats.

Oats are cereals that are found in the dried state. They are normally bland in taste and are prepared as porridge and are famous at the breakfast table around the world. They help to eliminate cholesterol from the body.

How does your body benefit from eating oats?

As mentioned above oats absorb the cholesterol from your body and break them up and eliminate them from your body. Thus they indirectly help to prevent heart diseases, blood pressure and cancers.

They are known to cure depression and anxiety. Unrefined oats must be eaten by those who suffer from insomnia.

Oatmeal scrubs are famous for exfoliating your skin to eliminate dead skin cells. As they are natural they do not scar your skin. They also help to absorb excess oils from oily skin.

Pregnant women must eat a bowl of oatmeal daily as they are bursting with essential nutrients that are beneficial for the woman as well as the child. They are low in fat and saturated fats while are a rich source of carbohydrates and protein. Also, they are a source of zinc which helps in metabolism, healing wounds, growth of new cells and reproduction.

There are a few simple things you can try if your children resist oats. Try making the porridge with half part milk and half part water. This makes the porridge a little less rich and thick. Add few fresh or dry fruits as per the size of the serving.
