Summers bring in the cheer and fun of hanging out with friends, going to the beach and barbecues. This is also the time to wear shorts, bathing suits and detoxify. Of course cashing in on complements in that great bathing suit after loosing a few pounds is only added advantage of a healthy summer diet.

Fresh fruits

Attempt eating at least 4 to 5 fruits daily and, no, drinking fruit juice is not the same as chewing on a whole fruit. Most fruit juices, unless freshly squeezed, loose most of their nutrients when they get processed for packaging. Eating the whole fruit also helps you get your daily dose of dietary fiber, which is very important if you are aiming to shed a few pounds and also to cleanse your system.

Drink a lot of fluids

You might be thinking that a fruit juice even if it is packaged, is better than a soda. Well, not really. It is still packed with preservatives and sugar, even if it says its sugar free, the natural fruit sugars in the form of a juice; go directly into your blood stream, as opposed to when you chew on the fruit. Try home made lemonade and instead of sugar add honey.

If you choose to have fruit juice, have it with the pulp and try making it at home where you can have it freshly squeezed.

Don’t forget to have the one easily available and most vital drink, yes, you guessed it right, water! It re hydrates and any amount of juices or other liquids do not match up to the goodness of water.

Salads

Load up on salads in summer, the more colorful your bowl, the better. And, this is not simply because it’s visually appealing, but more the colors more the nutrients.

All the reds have vitamin A, tomatoes are rich in lycopene which helps you fight cancer, bell peppers are great source of vitamin C, and lettuce helps your liver stay healthy. Besides, salads are rich in fiber and high in water content. They help cool down your system during summer and keep you feeling light. Try adding sprouts or nuts to your salad bowl. Squeeze an orange or a lime and some pepper to make a yummy low fat, fresh and tangy dressing which feels so good in summer.

Meats

Protein is a very important part of a healthy diet. Meats & seafood are a good source of protein. However, turkey, chicken or fish are better choices as compared to red meats in summer. If red meat is your choice, make sure you accompany it with a bowl of salad .Squeezing lime over grilled meat helps cut the fat.

Instead of meat, try having a bowl of natural flavored non sweetened yoghurt or sprouts, nuts and milk to get your daily dose of protein.
