Herbal remedies for ear infections

Ear infection often develops due to complications from common cold and infections in the upper respiratory area, like the infection in adenoid glands, tonsils and sinusitis. The portion of the ear that lies behind the ear drum is called the middle ear. In this middle ear, sometimes fluids develop and at times this fluid gets infected. However, this fluid drains out to the throat through the tube called the Eustachian tube. When these tubes stop functioning, they get blocked for some other reason ear infection takes place in the ear. Some herbal remedies of ear infections are stated below:

Herbal remedies:

Echinacea: The cone flower of this plant which is native to North America and has been widely used by the Great Plains Indian Tribes. Treating with Echinacea becomes even more effective if drops of garlic and mull oil are placed in the ears at the same time. One must continue this therapy for three days and most of the infections in the ear get cleared. Still if it does not work, one must switch to antibiotics.

Garlic oil: Garlic is great in killing bacteria and is one of the most effective natural remedies in clearing ear infection. This oil has to be applied to a cotton ball and then put inside the ear to help in fighting infections. Again by putting 3-4 drops of garlic oil in the ear and by allowing it to stay there for five minutes helps it in soaking the oil in the ear canal for good. This should be done twice a day.

Tree Tea oil: Antibiotics are unhealthy if used repeatedly in repeated ear infections. Tea tree oil is a natural alternative to antibiotics for the healing of ear infections. This oil has the properties that can kill bacterial infections. Mixing this oil with an equal amount of vegetable oil and putting 3-4 drops of this mixture in the infected ear helps in curing infection.

Mullein oil: Oil of the mullein herb has been traditionally used by North Americans tribes for treating inflammation and swelling in the body. Mullein can act on the infection and the warm oil can be used as a topical ointment and if dripped into the infected ear of the child. This will act as a soothing balm for the irritated and infected ear of the child.

There are many other herbal remedies for ear infection. Green tea, Goldenseal, olive leaf, St. John’s wort oil, etc. has antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can help in treating and curing infections in the ear.

I suffer from Tinnitus (hissing sound) in my right ear and also a substantial hearing loss. I wonder if there is an effective herbal remedy, for these ailments, without the use of hearing aids, which I would prefer to avoid.
