Excessive pressure inside the veins leads the valves to damage and results in a build up of blood that makes them twisted and swollen. This condition of veins is clinically referred as to varicose veins. Any vein of our body can suffer the problem of varicose but the veins of legs are at higher risk as they hold and support whole body weight.
Valves of the vein stop blood from draining back down the leg under the force of gravity. When these valves no longer work efficiently, blood collects and dilates the veins, causing those just under the skin to burn blue and lumpy, especially on the backs of the calves and the inside of the legs. The other symptoms may include swelling of ankles and feet, aching legs, itching, ulceration, eczema etc. Consumption of unhealthy diet, sedentary life style, occupation involving long hours of sitting or standing, obesity etc are the major factor leading to the problem of varicose veins.
In order to reduce the risk of varicose veins, you should avoid sitting or standing for long hours. If you feel that you are over weight, you should join some weight loss program with an expert’s help. Go for morning walk on a regular basis and go for a regular exercise. Hence, you should increase consumption of fiber rich foods like whole grain cereals and rice. A regular exercise or yoga are also very helpful in avoiding varicose veins.
There are several herbs with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that lend themselves to alleviating the symptoms of varicose veins.
