Home Based Treatment of Cholera

February 11, 2009

Infection of the small bowel due to a germ, vibrio cholerae, leads to the problem of cholera. It is one of the most dangerous disorders as in case not treated in time it may cause the death of the patient. The past records show that percentage of the patients dying due to this disease is considerably high.

Hence, it is very important to know the basic factors which lead to the problem of cholera and it treatment. Intestine of our body gets badly affected due to this disease. Cholera spreads with a high speed. The contaminated water and flies are the main factors which spread is very easily. After first attack of the germ, the person experiences a problem of diarrhea and later the symptoms grow very rapidly and frequent bowel movement with watery and loose stools occurs. In some cases it may accompanied by vomiting also.

Due to excessive loss of water from the body, the person suffering from cholera feels very thirsty. Abdominal cramps, dry mouth, dry skin, weakness, restlessness, nausea, etc are the other important symptoms of cholera. Patient of cholera should be given water and water based fluids very frequently to compensate the loss of water in the body. Food in solid form should be avoided and liquid food such as vinegar, tea, lemon juice, onions, etc should be given as a diet. The patient should not be given uncooked vegetables.

Drinking water is the best thing that can be done in cholera. The patient should be given as much water as he can drink. Coconut water and cucumber juice are very effective in cholera. Take equal amounts of cucumber juice and coconut water, give this to the patient in regular intervals so that there should not be a deficiency of water in the body.

Onion is one of the best home remedies for cholera. Onion when mixed with pepper powder gives a quick relief from the symptoms. Lemon water is also equally beneficial. Give the patient as much of the lemon water (or lemon juice) as he can drink. This will keep the body well hydrated and therefore will keep the symptoms under controls. Please note that cholera can lead to serious consequences and hence you should consult the doctor if the symptoms are persistent.
