Home Remedies for Cuts and Grazes

January 28, 2009

An inevitable part of an active childhood and an occasional occurrence for adults in the kitchen and garden, minor cuts and grazes can nearly always be dealt with effectively at home by using traditional first aid remedies. The purpose of treatment is to stop any bleeding, protect the broken skin against infection, and promote healing. Cuts to the skin and underlying tissue from a sharp object, such as knife or piece of glass, will bleed, sometimes profusely, if blood vessels are severed. Grazes or abrasions are superficial wounds that occur when the skin is scraped. They may contain embedded dirt or girt.

The following steps are designed to remove dirt and stop bleeding – wash hands with soap and warm water and with an antiseptic solution, such as hydrogen peroxide, before touching the wound.  Gently rinse the wound under tepid running water to remove any dirt. Pat dry with a sterile gauze pad or clean cloth, and press the wound gently for a few minutes. Hold the edges of a gaping cut together with thin strips of surgical tape. Cover a small cut or graze with an adhesive dressing and a larger cut or graze with a sterile gauze dressing, held in place with bandages.

The following natural remedies reduce the risk of infection – Bathe a cut or graze in a solution of one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 150 milliliters of water, or in cooled cinnamon tea, sage tea or parsley leaf tea – all of which are antiseptic. Ordinary black tea, onion juice and garlic juice are antiseptic and help reduce bleeding. Honey helps prevent infection and promotes healing. Apply a solution of distilled witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide on gauze to the wound.

This rapidly stops bleeding, helps relieve pain, reduces swelling and promotes healing. Clean a wound with a solution of 10 drops of the homeopathic remedy Calendula or Hypericum in half a cup of water. If the wound is very painful, apply a temporary dressing soaked in a fresh batch of the solution.

Make a mixture of two drops of germanium essential oil, two of lavender oil and one of peppermint oil, and sprinkle it on the clean dressing before you cover the wound. Apply a herbal ointment containing calendula (marigold) before dressing a graze.
