Home Remedies for Gingivitis

The medical name for bleeding gums is Gingivitis. It is an inflammation caused in the mouth that affects the tissues surrounding the teeth and the gums. I remember suffering from this since the age of 4 and always went to see my dentist kicking and screaming. Not paying attention to his advice cause tooth decay and several cavities in my mouth a few years later.

Gingivitis is caused by bacteria or plaque or food particles accumulating between the teeth and gums. These are the same causes for tooth decay. If you have bleeding gums chances are that you have a cavity as well. Some of the symptoms are discolored gums, bleeding while brushing, sore gums, bleeding while chewing food and bad breathe.

While in extreme cases it is imperative that you consult a dentist; if the bleeding is in its starting phase there are a few home remedies that you can try.

Home remedies for bleeding gums

-The best and simplest home remedy is to brush your teeth twice a day. Wash your mouth with mouthwash as well after brushing. Herbal toothpastes and mouthwashes are the best in this situation. Use a fluoride based toothpaste.

-Another effective yet simple method is to use clove oil on the affected gum. The oil will cause a burning sensation for a few minutes but will soothe the gum and prevent further bleeding. You can choose to keep a clove in your mouth and chew on it. This takes care of the bad breathe caused by your gums as well.

-Add a pinch of salt to warm water and gargle regularly. The salt prevents the gums from bleeding further.

-Aloe Vera has curative powers in this case. Rub aloe vera pulp on the bleeding gums and drink the juice to stop the bleeding instantly.

-To prevent the swelling and bleeding from spreading make a paste of water and holy basil powder and rub it with your finger tips on your gums throughout your mouth. The holy basil acts to prevent further bleeding and swelling.

-To get rid of the bacteria in your mouth wash your mouth with a paste of baking powder and water. The baking powder kills the bacteria that cause the swelling of the gums.
