Home Remedies for Infants and Children
March 17, 2009
It’s an amazing feeling to have a healthy happy baby around; however that feeling tends to melt away with the slightest sign of the baby falling ill. From a common cold to cough and fever infants have a way of attracting germs and diseases. Maintaining hygiene is of utmost importance, however that seems to be a difficult task in the toddler stage as your child has a tendency to drop food and other articles around he house.
We have all heard the popular saying that ‘prevention is better than cure’ so make sure all the vaccinations are given on time. Between the ages of a few months till 3 your child may suffer from acute dandruff. Here the dandruff sticks to the scalp and hair and is extremely painful. It may even spread to the eyebrow area. This is known as ‘Cradle Cap’.
What causes Cradle Cap?
Excess secretion of oils tends accumulate in the glands and dry up. The skin cells die off and produce oily scales. These oily scales cause the dandruff that stick to the infant’s scalp.

Remember brushing the infant’s hair roughly will not take care of the dandruff. Warm oil massages on a daily basis followed by a warm towel placed on the head tends to loosen the dandruff. Wash the oil off with mild glycerin based soap. Don not use any shampoo especially dandruff based shampoo on the baby’s scalp as it will cause harm. Gently brush the infant’s hair to loosen the dandruff.
Constipation
I remember when my baby was born I kept track of her bowel movements like it was the most important thing to do at the time. While most babies had several bowel movements in a day, mine had just one. I was quiet proud of a well mannered baby till my physician told me that it could lead to severe constipation, it was then that I started watching her like a hawk.

One of the best and painless procedures is to make sure that your baby is drinking water. Try giving the baby warm water rather that water at room temperature. You may try giving the child fruit juices or a banana in the case of a child older than 6 months. Remember if your child hasn’t had a bowel movement for over 24 hours it would be advisable to consult her doctor immediately.
Common Cold and Cough
Children are most susceptible to a weather change. Their bodies take time to adjust and hence tend to get colds easily. They are also prone to getting colds and cough from the members of the household or other children.
