Scaly skin can be caused due to thyroid disorders which make the skin and hair dry or it could simply be due to extreme weather conditions. Sometimes, if you have been ill for a long period, scaly skin could also be a side effect of strong medication. There are quite a few other reasons for this skin condition. The skin looks dry and almost like that of a fish. This can result in the person becoming self conscious. There are few simple things you can try at home which can help you.
If the weather is extremely dry, using products with moisturizing qualities can provide a lot of relief. Don’t use regular soap; instead look for shower gels or special soaps which don’t dry your skin out.
Immediately after your shower, when you wipe yourself dry is the perfect time to apply a moisturizer. Your skin is soft from the shower and can soak up the moisture better.
Use baby oil all over body. It is non oily and does not stain your clothes. Many people have found this to be very effective. Let this settle on your skin for a few minutes and if you like, you can top it up with a moisturizer.
Look for special medicated moisturizers as opposed to cosmetic ones. When your skin is extremely dry, it can get very itchy. There are moisturizers available with an ‘itch relief’ formula as well. Carry a small tube with you to work and keep re applying throughout the day.
At night, before sleeping use oils such as castor oil or olive oil on your body, as these are thicker in consistency and provide better protection. Your skin repairs itself in the night and that’s why nighttime skin care regimes show better results.
If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, check with your doctor for supplements that can help you.
Eat foods that are rich in vitamin A and E as these are beneficial to the skin. Include oily fish rich in natural oils, along with almonds and nuts in your daily diet.
Ask you doctor if it is ok to take vitamin supplements everyday to help you further.
If after a few weeks of trying all of the above, you still see no results, consult a skin specialist for medical guidance.
