Home Remedies for Sprain

January 21, 2009

Widening and tearing of ligament is termed as sprain. The fibrous tissues forming a bone joint by joining two or more bones are called ligaments. Ligaments consist of very soft tissues and therefore they are always are higher risk of getting sprain. The body joints like knees, ankles, wrist joints etc are prone to sprains.

There are various causes leading the problem of sprain and most of these reasons involve accidental gestures. Movement of affected area becomes very painful and difficult in case of sprain. The major causes responsible for sprain include casual stepping on rough or uneven surfaces, exercises which involve over stretching of ligaments, rapid and sudden fall of the body, occupation involving lifting of heavy objects, a forceful blow to certain parts of the body, twisting etc.

Powerful muscles and bones are comparatively less risk of getting a sprain. Hence it is important to keep the body muscles and bone strong and healthy. Sometimes bone and muscles diseases make them weak and hence they become more vulnerable to sprain. Sensible exercises, consumption of healthy and balance diet, intake of fresh fruits and vegetables are good practices for making bone and muscles strong and for avoiding sprain.

As a matter of fact most of the people go for over the counter drugs for getting quick relief from pain. However a long term and regular consumption of these medications can lead to several health complications as their side effect. Hence it is advisable to go for home based remedies rather than taking these over the counter drugs.

There are various home based remedies available for sprain. A gentle massage of sunflower oil is very effective in treatment of sprain. Take approximately 250 ml of sunflower oil, add one teaspoonful of camphor oil to it. Massage slowly the affected area. It will give a quick relief from pain and will cure the sprain. Putting chopped onion on the affected area is also very helpful in sprain. Take equal amount of garlic oil and almond oil in a bowl, massage with this mixture gently on the affected areas. You will experience a relief from the sprain.

Compression can also be used for a quick relief. Cold compresses can be used as they are very helpful in getting relief from the pain. In case the pain is persistent, you should contact a doctor.
