How Eating Leads to Lowered Stress Levels

June 9, 2009

Doctors constantly stress on eating a healthy diet. Eating healthy helps to promote better health. There are many reasons why a person may get stressed out; some of them include poor physical health. A balanced diet is handy in this case.

Eating well helps your body and your immune system to build resistance against germs and bacteria that lead to the formation of illnesses. So the next time you sit at your dinner table; remember the food that you eat can either build or break your immune system.

In order to have lower stress levels you must first begin by evaluating the food you eat. If you are eating foods that are high in fats and low in nutrition then you are harming your body. Also eating foods that are high in sodium or salt are not helping you much. You need to look for foods with higher nutritional value and lower in carbohydrates and calories. Stay away from oils and unsaturated fats. Vegetable oils are a good choice but your best bet is olive oil. It has a low heating point which requires lesser amounts of oil to cook.

Healthy foods that help to reduce your stress levels include oranges. When your body is faced with increased stress levels, it releases free radicals. The Vitamin C from the Oranges helps to keep the count of these free radicals in check.

When you are stress out, your body craves carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes help to satisfy this urge. It is a healthier option to grabbing a doughnut or a candy bar.

Green vegetables and leafy vegetables like spinach and beans are a powerhouse of nutrition and vitamins. These help your body to fight the stressors and reduce your stress levels drastically.

Swap your dairy products with low fat versions of the same. They are lower in fats and they help to increase the amount of calcium and Vitamins in your body.

It is so true that you need to really focus on a healthy diet in order to manage stress which has a multitude of negative effects on our minds and bodies. As a Registered Dietitian, I always speak with my clients about their stress levels and what positive changes they can make with their diets and also their lifestyles. In my new book, “How to Eat Fried Chicken and Be Thin Too” I address the 4 most important components to an overall healthy lifestyle: Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Management, and Healthy Sleep. If anyone is interested in more information, the book can be found on Amazon.com and at Strategic Book Publishing.
