How to Avoid an Ear Ache on an Airplane

I always wondered why I suffered from such bad ear ache when I took my flights. I looked at little kids around me that would scream and cry as soon as the flight began to take off or land. I then realized that the change in pressure attracted such pain. Everytime we changed altitude the same thing would happen. There are several things you can do to avoid this pain.

Before the flight begins to taxi on the runway, ask the flight attendant for a bottle of water. Keep sipping tiny sips of water and let it go down your throat slowly. You can try the same with juice, especially for children as you can divert their attention from the pain for a few seconds.

For older children and yourself; you can try chewing on gum or any type of hard candy. This helps to move your jaw muscles and frequently swallowing your saliva can help to reduce the pain. Swallowing helps to open up the tube that equalizes the pressure and attempts to keep you pain free.

Another thing you can try is to hold your breath and then try and breathe out in a way to pop your ears.

If you are suffering form a common cold or are uneasy due to a minor illness you must reschedule your travel as traveling while you are ill can damage your ear drums permanently.

Try and sleep as much as you can when you are on your flight. This is especially true for when you are on long haul flights. Sleep is the best way to keep you away from pain.

Ask the flight attendant for ear plugs to keep you pain free. By covering your ears, you are making sure that the pressure in the cabin does not affect your ears in an adverse way.
