Though premature babies generally do not show any health issues; some show long term permanent health hazards. Premature babies are those that are born before thirty seven weeks of pregnancy because the mother goes into natural labor before time. There are several factors that lead to the mother going into preterm labor and stress is the number one reason for this. In some cases the women’s uterus is not mature enough to carry the child any further. Sudden fall from a steep place or a sudden jerk or trauma can cause a woman to get into labor before time. Chain smokers, those that consume drugs or alcohol and those below 18 or above 40 are most likely to get into labor before time.
No mother can be blamed for preterm labor though it would be best to make certain lifestyle changes to ensure the safety of mother and child. Those who smoke need to give up smoking immediately after they conceive; this reduces the risk of birth defects drastically. You also need to stay away from all sorts of alcohol; even foods prepared in alcohol must be forbidden.
You need to have a well planned balanced diet. This is to ensure that your body gets the required amounts of minerals and vitamins that it requires. You also need to ensure that you are stress free. Keep stressors away from you for the nine months of your pregnancy. Avoid people and situations that lead to stress; always maintain your calm and indulge in activities that make you happy. You need to maintain good health in order to help yourself for a healthy pregnancy in time.
Indulge in mild exercise and make sure that you follow your doctor’s orders. Take your medications as prescribed in order to avoid the risk of preterm labor. You must also ensure that you do not cause yourself any physical strain. This will increase the risk of preterm labor. As you approach your third trimester; you need to start relaxing and reducing physical activity. Rest and drink plenty of fluids to maintain you hydration levels.
Elevate your feet with pillows when you sleep and make sure that you wear comfortable night wear. Use loose cotton lingerie during the day. Stores have special maternity underwear and it is best to use these from the second trimester onwards.
