
Gout attack is a type of arthritis when the ankle and feet joints are swollen in gout. If there is a gout attack, then it can fall down within a week, without any treatment. But, it will keep on occurring. Initially, there would be gap of months and even years between the gout attacks, But, with time, the frequency of attack will rise. The situation will become chronic and there will be permanent damage to the joints.
In most cases, gout attacks take place because of improper eating habits, especially high purines diet. Purines convert into uric acid and result in inflammation of joints. Thus, it is essential to avoid food with high purines to avert acute gout attack.
Following are some of the food items that should not be included in the diet to avoid gout.
Junk Foods
Those who have hyperuricemia must avoid junk foods like hot dogs. Such food contains leftovers and high purine levels. Hence hot dogs can give rise to gout attacks.
Bacon
A popular food for breakfast but it includes high level of nitrates and purines along with sodium that can cause dryness in the joints. Bacon makes gout attack even more acute.
Game Foods
Game foods come with high purine level. Excess consumption of these foods can make gout attack more severe and incurable. Hence, avoid game foods such as squirrel, grouse and pheasant. Chicken and turkey can be taken in little quantities but that depends on one’s ability to tolerate.
Fish
There are certain fish that are not good for gout patients. Shellfish, salmon, shrimp and even crabs contain high level of purines.
Legumes
Legumes can cause gout but one can take it in small quantity. There is different level of tolerance of eating legumes among different people. Some can eat legumes without any hazards.
Alcohol
Alcohol is probably the most common reason of gout attack. Consumption of alcohol, especially beer must be stopped. Level of purines in beer is extremely high and thus it must be avoided.
