A black eye is caused as a result of an injury to the face. In this case, blood collects around the facial tissues and causes a swelling and dark discoloration. This causes a black eye. Most black eyes heal on by themselves and with a little help from home remedies. Remember that though it is known as a black eye; the eye itself does not suffer from any injury. Since the skin around the area is loose and it is surrounded with fat; it collects fluid easily and leads to the swelling and discoloration.
Immediately after the injury you must rest and apply ice on the area. This helps to reduce the swelling and the discoloration. Ice helps to cool the area and prevent the fluids from collecting. For the first 24 hours after the injury apply ice in the area every 2 hours. This will help to reduce the swelling drastically. Do not apply ice directly to the injured area. If the skin around the eye is torn then you must use a lotion to help the skin to heal. If you do not have ice; then apply a bag of frozen vegetables to the area.
Avoid eating any hot and spicy foods and avoid hot beverages like tea and coffee. Avoid alcohol till the swelling reduces. Using any raw meat on the area also helps to reduce the swelling and reduces the healing time. However if the skin is torn then you must avoid applying raw meat as the bacteria in the meat can penetrate into your skin as cause further complications.
Protect yourself from further injury till you are completely healed. Avoid going out in the sun and use protective sun glasses when you do. Drink plenty of water and keep your body well hydrated. The more water you have in your system the faster your skin will heal. Avoid sleeping on your face till the injury is completely healed; instead sleep on your back so that your head is firm on the pillow and the blood flow does not affect the injury.
