How to Care for Your Body and Mind After a Miscarriage

August 31, 2009

The trauma of a miscarriage is beyond belief. It has an impact on your physical as well as your mental health. Unfortunately, some women go through it more than once in their lifetime in the attempt to conceive a child and go through depression and some show loss of memory for extended periods. There is no way you can stop a miscarriage and once you start bleeding during your pregnancy then you know that the inevitable is about to occur. Several behaviors lead to a miscarriage. Having sex when you are pregnant, smoking, drinking alcohol, birth control pills before your pregnancy may lead to a miscarriage.

You will be hospitalized for a few days though you may not want to be. This is because there will be leftover tissue in the uterus and the doctors need to take all precautions to remove them. You will be on medication and you need to get as much rest as possible.

When you leave the hospital you will still be on medication and you need to do everything in your power to control your environment. Keep mourning family members at bay; they will only make you feel worse than you already do. Take your medications on time. You will still be bleeding for about 15 to 20 days and you must use a sanitary pad instead of a tampon as the vaginal area will be delicate.

Do not over exert yourself. You must try and rest as much as possible. You can start exercising after 2 to 3 months; though you must check with your doctor before you start. When you do; then do not overdo any exercises. Once you start exercising you will begin to feel better.

Talk to your doctor about the kind of diet you need to maintain. Drink plenty of liquids in order to keep your body well hydrated. You must avoid caffeine drinks though as they do more harm than good.

You must also talk to your doctor about how long you need to wait before you try to conceive again. If you do not want to try then you must look at different types of contraception.

Grieving is a part of the healing process and you must take your time to grieve. Do not bottle up your emotions as it will have a negative impact on your mental health.

I have to disagree with you on a few points. First of all, all bleeding during pregnancy does not mean you will miscarry. If there is any bleeding, you should speak with your doctor, but some women do bleed during pregnancy and go on to have a healthy baby. Also, it has been shown that having sex does not lead to miscarriage unless your doctor has prohibited it for some underlying medical reason. That is a myth, and it only leads to women feeling guilty who miscarry.
I think it should be up to the woman whether she wants to see family members or not. For me, it was helpful to see certain family members. They were a big support and encouragement.
