The pain that your child goes through during the circumcision is a fraction of the pain he will feel during the recovery period. In some cases the circumcision has religious backgrounds while in others it is medical circumstances that require the surgery.
It is important that the best care is given to your child after the surgery. After you take the child home from the hospital you must make sure that the child is kept hygienic. Wash the area three to four times a day in addition to washing the area every time you change a diaper. In most cases you will be given an ointment to use however; if your doctor has not given you anything then you can use a small amount of petroleum jelly on the area. Make sure that the jelly is not perfumed.
Change the child’s diaper more often than you normally would in order to make sure that the area is kept dry. When you are washing the area with water make sure that the umbilical stump does not get wet. In about 10 to 12 days the scab will fall off and about a few days after that the plastic bell will fall off. After this happens there is no need for any extra hygiene beyond the normal hygiene. However, if the plastic bell does not fall off within 15 days then you need to call the doctor immediately.
You must also call the doctor if you see any bleeding from the area, swelling, foul smell from the area, fever, difficulty in urination or discoloration of the tip of the penis. You must remember that the child will be in pain and will cry when he urinates as the area will give a burning sensation. You need not panic however if the child shows difficulty in urination then you must call the doctor immediately.
